Kütahya tilework is being revalued

Tile prices at auction over the last three years suggest collector interest is shifting from painting to the applied arts.

Kütahya has lived in İznik's shadow since the eighteenth century. Three years of auction results do not reverse that order — but they close the gap markedly. A plate, a ewer or a tile panel used to sell for a tenth of what an oil of the same size fetched. That ratio is now closer to a third. The reason is supply: second-hand supply in painting is flat, while pieces from private collections have returned to the market in the applied arts.
