Fikret Mualla
1903–1967 · Turkish
Other spellings: Fikret Moualla · Fikret Mualla Saygı · Mualla Fikret
A painter who spent most of his life in poverty in Paris. Café scenes, circuses, street crowds and musicians, worked at the speed of gouache and watercolour in heavy contours and unmixed colour. His standing in Turkey was only recognised after his death. His work is one of the rare cases where painting was not a career but a compulsion.
